Developing good habits: SAVE Method

In our pursuit of success, we often overlook one of the most powerful tools at our disposal: the design of our environment. The spaces we inhabit and the objects that surround us play a crucial role in shaping our habits, behavior, and ultimately, our success. By understanding and leveraging this connection, we can create environments that foster positive habits and set us on a path to achieving our goals. The concept of environment design is rooted in the idea that our surroundings significantly influence our behavior. James Clear, author of "Atomic Habits," emphasizes that habits are actions triggered by cues, such as specific times, locations, or activities. These cues create a craving, leading to a response (the habit) and a reward. By making desired habits more accessible and visible, and unwanted habits less so, we can effectively rewire our behavior patterns.

Visibility and Accessibility
One of the most effective strategies in environment design is to create visual cues that draw our attention to desired habits. For instance, if you aim to read more, place books in easily accessible and visible locations, such as on your bedside table or desk. This simple change increases the likelihood that you'll pick up a book instead of reaching for your phone. Conversely, to curb a habit like snacking on junk food, keep unhealthy snacks out of sight, perhaps in a high cupboard or in the back of the pantry.

Reducing Friction
The number of steps it takes to perform a habit can also influence our likelihood of sticking to it. By reducing friction for good habits and increasing it for bad ones, we can make the path to success smoother. For example, if you want to exercise regularly, set up your workout clothes and equipment the night before. This reduces the effort required to get started and makes it easier to follow through.

Relationship with Objects
Our behavior is not just defined by the objects in our environment, but by our relationship with them. A sofa can be a cue for drinking or it can be a cue for watching TV depending upon the relationship we have developed with it. Similarly a smart phone can be a productive tool for some while wastage of time for others.

Changing Neural pathways
To change a habit, we need to examine the cues that trigger it and the action that follows. Like a feeling of reward at the end of a successful day may trigger a need to chill. That can lead to action of smoking or drinking or going out with family. If need to chill leads you to wrong ways, first you need to think better or healthier ways to chill and associate them with the trigger. Then make it easier to take action so you don't fall into the old ways again. To save from bad habits and develop good habits you can use the method SAVE. Make the process satisfying, attractive, visible and easy to develop a habit and unsatisfying, unattractive, invisible and difficult to save you from a bad habit.

By thoughtfully designing our environment, we can harness its power to support our goals and cultivate habits that lead to success. Remember, small changes in our surroundings can lead to significant improvements in our behavior and overall well-being.

Sanskar - Neural Pathways

Our 'sanskar'—the ingrained habits, reactions, and behaviors—are deeply rooted in the neural pathways of our brain. These pathways are established based on past experiences and are reinforced through repetition. When faced with a situation, these pre-established pathways determine our reactions, often unconsciously. By understanding the neuroscience behind this process, we can actively work towards developing good 'sanskar' through practices like meditation.

Neural pathways are the connections between neurons that become stronger each time they are used. This means that repeated thoughts and behaviors lead to the formation of robust neural circuits, which in turn influence our habitual responses. New experiences and information can create new neural pathways, offering the potential to alter our 'sanskar'.

Meditation is a powerful tool for transforming 'sanskar'. It helps in achieving states of lightness, pleasure, and happiness, which can be reinforced through regular practice. During meditation, the brain experiences a state of heightened neuroplasticity, meaning it is more capable of forming new neural connections. This state allows for the development of positive neural pathways associated with calmness, compassion, and mindfulness.

Steps to Develop Good Sanskar through Meditation

Regular Practice: Consistency is key in meditation. Daily practice helps in gradually strengthening the desired neural pathways, leading to lasting changes in behavior and reactions.

Mindful Awareness: Focus on observing thoughts and feelings without judgment. This awareness can help in identifying negative patterns and consciously replacing them with positive ones.

Positive Visualization: Visualizing positive outcomes and feelings during meditation can help in creating neural pathways associated with those emotions. For instance, visualizing oneself reacting with patience in stressful situations can strengthen the neural circuits associated with patience.

Gratitude and Compassion Practices: Incorporating practices like expressing gratitude and cultivating compassion can foster positive sanskar. These practices enhance feelings of happiness and satisfaction, reinforcing the neural pathways related to these emotions.

Our sanskar are the result of the neural pathways shaped by our past experiences. Through the deliberate practice of meditation, we can develop positive 'sanskar' by creating and strengthening neural pathways associated with desirable traits and behaviors. This transformative process not only improves our reactions and habits but also contributes significantly to our overall well-being.

Cognitive dissonance & Marketing: 'Influence: The psychology of Persuasion' by Robert Cialdini

"Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" by Robert Cialdini is a seminal work that explores the psychology behind why people say "yes" and how these principles can be harnessed in marketing. From a marketer's perspective, understanding these psychological triggers can greatly enhance the effectiveness of persuasive techniques. One key concept discussed in the book is cognitive dissonance and its application in marketing strategies.

Cognitive dissonance refers to the discomfort experienced when a person holds conflicting beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors. Here's a summary of how cognitive dissonance can be utilized effectively in marketing, based on insights from "Influence":

Creating Perceived Value: Marketers can use cognitive dissonance by emphasizing the positive aspects of a product or service, which helps consumers justify their purchase decisions. For example, when a luxury brand highlights the exclusivity and prestige associated with their products, consumers may feel more compelled to justify the higher price they paid, thus reducing dissonance.

Encouraging Brand Loyalty: Once a consumer has committed to a brand or product, cognitive dissonance can strengthen their loyalty. Marketers achieve this by reinforcing the positive attributes of the chosen brand, making it difficult for consumers to switch to alternatives without experiencing dissonance.

Offering Consistent Messaging: Consistency is a powerful tool in marketing to minimize cognitive dissonance. Marketers ensure that their advertising messages align with consumers' existing beliefs and attitudes. For instance, a brand promoting environmental sustainability consistently demonstrate eco-friendly practices in all aspects of its operations.

Encouraging Post-Purchase Rationalization: After making a purchase, consumers often engage in post-purchase rationalization to alleviate cognitive dissonance. Marketers can facilitate this process by providing positive reinforcement through customer testimonials, reviews, and expert endorsements that affirm the wisdom of the purchase decision.

Cialdini's book underscores the importance of ethical persuasion in marketing. By understanding cognitive biases like cognitive dissonance, marketers can create more compelling and persuasive campaigns that resonate with consumers' psychological needs and motivations. However, it's crucial to use these principles responsibly, ensuring that marketing practices prioritize transparency, honesty, and genuine value delivery to consumers.

ESBI framework

In Robert Kiyosaki's book "Rich Dad Poor Dad," the ESBI framework stands as a powerful tool for understanding different approaches to wealth creation and decision-making. This framework categorizes individuals into four main quadrants based on their primary source of income and approach to generating wealth: Employee (E), Self-Employed (S), Business Owner (B), and Investor (I). Let's delve into the ESBI framework and explore its uses and benefits for achieving career and financial growth.

ESBI Framework

Employee (E) Self-Employed (S) Business Owner (B) Investor (I)
Description Works for others, earns wages or salaries Owns and operates a business or provides services independently Manages a business that generates profits and operates independently Invests capital in assets to generate passive income
Income Source Active income (earnings from employment) Active income (earnings from self-employment) Passive and active income from business Passive income from investments
Work Dependency Dependent on employer, limited control over income Dependent on personal efforts, potential long hours Systems and teams in place, less direct involvement Investment management, less time-intensive
Key Characteristics Stable income, limited growth potential Autonomy, but higher risk and workload Scalability, potential for passive income Focus on wealth accumulation and financial growth

The ESBI framework is depicted as a quadrant, with each letter representing a distinct mindset and financial path -

Employee (E): Individuals in this quadrant earn income through employment. They work for others and receive wages or salaries in return for their time and effort. Employees typically trade time for money and have limited control over their income and work schedule.

Self-Employed (S): Self-employed individuals own and operate their own businesses or provide services directly to clients. They have more autonomy than employees but often face challenges such as long hours and reliance on their personal efforts to generate income.

Business Owner (B): Business owners have systems and teams in place that generate income independently of their direct involvement. They build and manage businesses that create value and produce profits, allowing for scalability and passive income.

Investor (I): Investors generate income through investments such as stocks, real estate, or other financial instruments. They leverage their capital to earn returns and grow wealth over time.

Uses and Benefits of the ESBI Framework

Decision Making: Understanding the ESBI framework helps individuals make informed decisions about their career and financial future. It encourages strategic thinking by highlighting different paths to wealth creation and the associated risks and rewards of each quadrant.

Career Growth: The framework guides individuals in identifying opportunities for career advancement and personal development. It encourages transitioning from being an employee or self-employed to becoming a business owner or investor, where greater financial freedom and autonomy can be achieved.

Financial Growth: By recognizing the income-generating capabilities of each quadrant, individuals can strategically allocate resources and focus on activities that lead to financial growth. The framework emphasizes the importance of passive income and asset-building for long-term wealth accumulation.

Diversification: The ESBI framework promotes diversification of income sources. By diversifying into business ownership and investments, individuals can create multiple streams of income and reduce dependency on a single source.

To apply the ESBI framework effectively

  • Assess your current financial situation and identify your primary income quadrant

Book Summary: 'Rich Dad Poor Dad' by Robert Kiyosaki

"Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki is a timeless classic that offers profound insights into achieving financial independence and wealth creation. Here are five of the most impactful lessons from the book that can pave the way towards financial freedom.

The Difference Between Assets and Liabilities

Kiyosaki introduces a fundamental concept distinguishing between assets and liabilities. Assets are things that put money in your pocket (like real estate, stocks, or businesses), while liabilities are things that take money out (such as mortgages, car loans, or credit card debt). Understanding this distinction is crucial for building wealth. To achieve financial freedom, focus on acquiring income-generating assets that can grow and provide passive income over time.

Importance of Financial Education

Kiyosaki emphasizes the critical role of financial education in attaining prosperity. He argues that traditional schooling often neglects practical financial literacy, leaving many individuals ill-prepared to navigate the complex world of money. By investing in your financial education—whether through reading, attending seminars, or learning from successful mentors—you empower yourself to make informed decisions and leverage opportunities for wealth accumulation.

Mindset Shift: Embrace Entrepreneurship

One of the core messages of "Rich Dad Poor Dad" is the importance of cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset. Kiyosaki encourages readers to break free from the "rat race" of traditional employment and explore entrepreneurship. Starting a business or investing in income-producing ventures can offer greater control over your financial destiny and unlock unlimited earning potential.

Make Money Work for You

Instead of working for money, Kiyosaki advocates for making money work for you. This concept underscores the power of passive income and investments. By building streams of passive income through investments in stocks, bonds, real estate, or intellectual property, you can achieve financial stability and eventual freedom from the constraints of traditional employment.

The Importance of Taking Calculated Risks

Kiyosaki encourages readers to embrace calculated risks as a means to accelerate wealth creation. While financial prudence is essential, playing it too safe can limit growth opportunities. Learning to assess risks intelligently and seizing strategic opportunities can lead to exponential gains and financial freedom in the long run.

In summary,  the book offers invaluable lessons that transcend mere financial advice. It advocates for a paradigm shift in how we approach money, urging individuals to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset, prioritize financial education, and leverage assets to generate passive income. By applying these lessons diligently, anyone can embark on the path towards financial freedom and achieve lasting prosperity. So, take the wisdom from "Rich Dad Poor Dad" to heart, and start building a future of financial abundance and independence today.

Embracing active learning: Unlocking faster and deeper understanding

In the pursuit of learning and retaining new information, the mode in which we engage with knowledge plays a pivotal role. When we are passive recipients, such as when we read, listen, or watch, our minds absorb content without much active involvement. However, true learning mastery occurs when we switch gears into the active mode—where we speak, write, create, or act. This shift from receiving to giving unleashes our cognitive potential and enhances our capacity to learn more effectively and remember for longer durations.

In passive modes of learning, our minds operate in a state of relative ease. We absorb information effortlessly, but the depth of processing is often limited. Conversely, in active modes of learning, such as speaking, writing, or problem-solving, our brains are fully engaged. This engagement ignites a cascade of cognitive processes—requiring us to organize thoughts, articulate ideas, and apply concepts actively.

Take speaking as an example. When we articulate our thoughts aloud, we are not just reciting information; we are actively synthesizing and expressing it in real-time. This process demands deeper engagement with the material, leading to better comprehension and retention. Similarly, writing requires us to structure ideas coherently, reinforcing neural pathways associated with the learned content.

Engaging in creative activities like drawing, composing, or coding also epitomizes active learning. These endeavors compel us to apply knowledge creatively, fostering a deeper understanding of underlying principles. The act of creation challenges our minds to innovate and problem-solve, reinforcing learning in ways that passive consumption cannot replicate.

Moreover, the benefits of active learning extend beyond immediate comprehension. Research indicates that active engagement enhances memory consolidation, making learned information more accessible in the long term. By transforming knowledge into action, we encode it more robustly into our cognitive framework, facilitating faster recall and application.

To harness the power of active learning effectively, adopt strategies that promote hands-on engagement. Encourage discussions, participate in interactive sessions, or integrate practice exercises into your learning routine. Embrace opportunities to apply newfound knowledge actively—whether through writing essays, teaching others, or engaging in practical projects.

In essence, active learning is a dynamic process that empowers us to transcend passive consumption and become creators of knowledge. By embracing this mode, we elevate our learning experiences, accelerate mastery of new skills, and cultivate a deeper understanding of the world around us.

In conclusion, the transformative impact of active learning cannot be overstated. By transitioning from passive reception to active creation, we activate our cognitive potential and amplify our capacity for learning. Embrace the active mode of learning as a catalyst for growth and discovery—where knowledge becomes not just absorbed, but truly internalized and empowered.
